Danger's of Bodybuilding's "Beginner's Logic"
January 23, 2007
Welcome to the January edition of The Get Big Ezine from The Build Muscle and Gain Weight Fast Guide.

It’s that time of year… If you are a gym-goer, you have undoubtedly noticed a large increase in the in bodies at your gym. Lines are long and successfully completing an intense workout can be a frustrating thing.

Quick Tip – Smart bodybuilders schedule a 2 week training break for the first of the year. This gets them by the resolutioner rush. By the time they head back to the gym mid-January, the resolutioners’ numbers have begun their very predictable dwindling.

Site New Stuff

Wanna Get BIG and Famous? - A new ABC show, “Dream On, America,” is looking for those who have the dream of bulking up – the scrawny to brawny story. Don’t know about you, but I’d love to see it. Fat people looking to lose are just dominating reality TV and it is making me ill.

Details here and the application form is here. Hurry, they told me they wanted all applications in by the end of January (for the first shows, I guess?).

So, why do all the “resolutioners” fail? In my experience, the majority of people who begin a physique-changing program fail before they begin. They either A) fail to do the planning necessary to develop an intelligent strategy that will lead them to their goals and/or B) they simply don’t get their mind set to accomplish the task.

From Sean Nalewanyj, here are 2 great articles on how to prepare yourself mentally, on how to make sure you follow-through all the way to some impressive physique changes. The first talks about developing the only personality that ever achieves significant muscle building success and the second talks about giving yourself a break – realizing that you’re not going to be “perfect” and persevering through your failings.

Don’t ignore the mental aspect of bodybuilding training. Getting your head in gear is more important than deciding whether to do 2 or 3 sets, whether or not to add shrugs to your routine or what brand of whey to go with.

Too Expensive? I get this a lot – “I can’t afford to eat that much, is there a way I can gain weight without eating?” No, there isn’t. But there is definitely a way to eat right cheaply. In fact, with some smart shopping, you can probably up your calorie consumption by quite a bit while simultaneously lowering your food bills considerably. Processed food isn’t just nutritionally lacking, it is expensive.

From the In-Box - Q&A

I have been following the advice on your site starting on January 1. I have worked out every day and increased my diet – consuming at least 3,300 calories every day (I weigh 162) . I drink 3 N-Large shakes a day with milk and taking NO-explode with creatine (3 scoops a day)…. I have not gained anything, maybe I even lost a pound. How is that possible? I also feel like I have less energy. Is that normal? Does it take a while to get going? (from D.T.)

You aren’t following the advice on my site. I didn’t suggest you work out “every day.” I didn’t tell you to take NO-Explode. I didn’t tell you to get about 75% (by my estimates) of your calories from shakes.

You are instead taking random advice and adding a lot of “beginner’s logic” to that. Beginner’s logic tells you that if someone tells you to train 3 days a week, that if you then double that you will get twice the results. If someone tells you to drink 1 shake a day, then drinking 3 will give you 3 times the benefit.

It doesn’t work like that. Bodybuilding results go to those who properly balance training, rest and nutrition. Beginner’s logic will destroy any chance you have to build muscle.

You are overwhelming your body. It won’t “get going” in time. It will instead progress further into an overtraining state and your health (and energy) will suffer.

My Advice: Re-read the site. STOP everything you are doing.

Allow your body a full two weeks to regroup from the torture you have been subjecting it to. Return with a more “sane” schedule. Do 3 workouts per week, working each muscle group just once per week. A workout should last no more than one hour.

Make sure your diet is based on solid, whole food nutrition. Use supplements to “supplement” your diet, not be it. You know, there is a reason that desperate overweight people get their jaws wired shut to lose weight – they can drink chocolate shakes all day long and still lose weight. It creates lazy digestion where your body doesn’t absorb all the nutrition. At a maximum, 50% of your calories should come from liquid sources (less is better).

Finish off your current supply of NO-Explode if you want. Past that, I’d stick to a basic creatine monohydrate powder if you want to use creatine. NO-Explode may be an exciting way to spend some money but there isn’t any real science to suggest it is going to help you towards your muscle building goals.

Final Thoughts

That’s it for now. I’m working on putting a contest together to inspire some people to share their positive mass gain stories – more on that next time.

Till then, keep training hard (and smart).
