Drs. Christopher R. Mohr and Greg E. Bradley-Popovich certainly have the credentials to talk muscle building. They are smart guys. And it would certainly make sense that anyone who was interested in building muscle mass would put a book by these authors on the top of their wish lists.

However, I came away disappointed with the book. It is a very academic look at muscle building. The authors seem determined not to put anything into the book that they can’t back up with a legitimate study. Such is the way of academic writing.

Looking at the evidence of all the studies is certainly a great place to start. But when settling on a strategy for mass gain, I’m not sure anyone is best off limiting themselves to just what can be shown to be effective in a university sponsored double-blind, placebo-controlled study. There are many techniques and practices that simply haven’t been given the opportunity to prove their worth in such studies.

In some places I wanted to ask the authors, “Is this really what you actually do? Is it how you train your top clients?” I’m not convinced this book is that.

There is value in the experience attained by actually going out and doing something. There is value in the person who has gone out and done something relaying his experiences to those who want to go out and do that same thing. While I know Dr. Mohr to be an accomplished trainer, I’m not sure I could have determined that from reading this book alone.

It is a rather dull read that is lacking in passion. I didn’t come away from it with a spring in my step, I came away wanting to take a nap. I didn’t see it adequately addressing the real-life questions and concerns that plague beginning trainers. I also didn’t see it as offering much for anyone but the beginner.

Included is a 12 week diet and training plan, giving you a daily meal plan and routine breakdown. This part is nicely done. It takes up the bulk of the books 300 plus pages.

Conclusion: You will find some weapons for mass construction in this book. But probably not enough to justify starting a war.
